When can babies have sunflower oil?
Sunflower oil may be introduced as soon as baby is ready to start solids. It can be used raw in dressings or for cooking.
Sunflower oil traces its roots to the Indigenous peoples of North America, who began cultivating sunflowers for their seeds thousands of years ago. When Spanish explorers brought sunflowers to Europe in the 16th century, the plant spread rapidly, especially in Eastern Europe and Russia, where sunflower oil became a cooking staple. Its popularity grew during periods when religious fasting rules restricted animal fats, and sunflower oil offered a plant-based alternative.
How do you serve sunflower oil to babies?
Every baby develops on their own timeline, and the suggestions on how to cut or prepare particular foods are generalizations for a broad audience.
6 months old + :
Use sunflower oil as part of dressings and sauces, or use in your cooking as desired. If you like, you can pour a small amount directly on baby’s tray or plate to let them taste the oil on its own.
12 months old +:
Continue to use sunflower oil as part of dressings, sauces, and marinades, and use in cooking as desired. At this age, toddlers may enjoy dipping age-appropriate foods in dips made with sunflower oil.
Opt for high-oleic sunflower oil in cooking, when available.
Store in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness and extend the oil’s shelf-life.
Use as a neutral base for salad dressings and sauces.
Is sunflower oil a choking hazard for babies?
No. Sunflower oil presents a low risk when safely prepared for a child’s age and developmental ability, though, in theory, an individual could choke on any food. To reduce the risk, prepare and serve sunflower oil in an age-appropriate way as described in the How to Serve section. As always, create a safe eating environment and stay within reach of baby during meals.

Is sunflower oil a common allergen?
No. Sunflower oil is made from sunflower seeds, and allergy to sunflower seeds is uncommon.[1] Additionally, sunflower seed oil is usually refined, which removes most of the proteins that cause allergy.
Is sunflower oil healthy for babies?
Yes. Sunflower oil offers varying amounts of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, antioxidants, and vitamin E. These nutrients support heart health, growth, brain development, vision, immune function, and nutrient absorption. When possible, choose high-oleic sunflower oil for cooking, as it is rich in monounsaturated fats, making it more stable for high-heat.
Can you use sunflower oil for cooking?
Yes. Refined sunflower oil has a high smoke point and is stable for frying or roasting. Cold-pressed sunflower oil is better used raw to preserve nutrients.
