Foundations Course

Our virtual course for professionals and students who want to advance their knowledge of how babies really learn to eat. Led by our award-winning team of pediatric feeding therapists, doctors, and dietitians, the course offers evidence-backed strategies for introducing solid food to baby and includes resources that you can use to help parents successfully introduce solids to baby. Available in English and captioned in either English or Spanish. Length: 90 minutes.

Objectives 

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the multi-faceted goals of starting solids and correctly identify how certain recommendations, actions and interventions support or detract from each goal area

  • Determine the “best” time to start solids for your patient based on readiness signs 

  • Identify neurodevelopmental, motor, and cognitive signs of readiness to initiate solids

  • Synthesize key recommendations on how to start solids safely and effectively

  • Gain a better understanding of how to coach families on starting solids and introducing self-feeding and finger foods.

  • Address common misconceptions about taking a solid foods first approach

  • Review mechanics of mastication and the swallowing mechanism

  • Understand choking mechanisms, real risks, and methods of reducing risk beyond abstinence

  • Discuss allergies, introducing common allergens, and ways to reduce risk

  • Summarize the research on solid food introduction and prevention of picky eating

  • Identify important nutritional concepts such as key nutrients and general nutritional philosophies
