When can babies have marjoram?
Marjoram may be introduced as soon as baby is ready to start solids, which is generally around 6 months of age.
Marjoram is a fragrant herb in the mint family and a close botanical relative of oregano. In fact, there is much confusion and crossover between plants known variously as marjoram or as oregano, depending on variety and region. With a warm and mildly floral flavor, marjoram is widely used in cooking throughout its native lands around the Mediterranean, as well as in dishes from Europe to North America. Fresh or dried, the herb brings delicate, earthy notes to stews, roasted meats, vegetable dishes, and spice blends like za’atar.
How do you serve marjoram to babies?
Cada bebé se desarrolla a su propio ritmo, y las sugerencias que ofrecemos sobre cómo cortar o preparar determinados alimentos son generalizaciones para una amplia audiencia.
6 months old +:
Finely chop fresh marjoram leaves and mix them into age-appropriate dishes, like mashed potatoes, a dressing for cooked vegetables, or a sauce for meat. As long as the stem of the plant is soft, you can finely chop it along with the leaves. If the stem has gotten woody and tough, remove the leaves from the stem before chopping. Alternatively, use dried marjoram or powdered marjoram to flavor food.
12 months old +:
Use fresh, dried, or powdered marjoram as you normally would in dishes, including whole fresh leaves. If you’ve left a large, woody sprig of marjoram in a dish to flavor it as it cooks, remember to remove it before serving to reduce the chance of discomfort if it ends up in the toddler’s portion of the meal.
You can substitute dried marjoram for fresh: 1 tablespoon (15 ml) fresh = 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried.
Add fresh marjoram in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking to preserve its aroma and taste. Marjoram doesn’t stand up well to long cook times or high heat.
Store fresh marjoram wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel inside a container in the fridge to extend the shelf-life.
Try pairing marjoram with oregano, thyme, and basil in family dishes.
Is marjoram a choking hazard for babies?
No. Marjoram presents a low risk when safely prepared for a child’s age and developmental ability, though, in theory, an individual could choke on any food. To reduce the risk, prepare and serve marjoram in an age-appropriate way as described in the How to Serve section. As always, create a safe eating environment and stay within reach of baby during meals.

Is marjoram a common allergen?
No. Allergies to marjoram are not common, but have been reported. Note that certain dried herb blends that feature marjoram may contain common food allergens (such as sesame seeds in zaatar), so make sure to read labels thoroughly if your child has food allergies. If your child is sensitive to plants of the Lamiaceae family such as mint, oregano, basil, lavender, sage, or thyme, take care when introducing marjoram, as these plants are closely related.[1]
Is marjoram healthy for babies?
Yes. Marjoram offers small amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Plus, it contains a number of plant compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which may offer anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.[2]
Is marjoram safe for babies?
Can babies have raw marjoram?
Yes, as long as it has been finely chopped and mixed into scoopable foods to make it easier for babies to manage in the mouth.
